Staff Spotlight

Rick Andrews

Rick Andrews has been a familiar face in horticulture sales since 1980, when he got his start with Yoder Brothers. From there, his journey took him through W.R. Grace, Michells, and McHutchison before joining EHR. Along the way, he has built a reputation as both a “plant finder” and an organizer who helps customers keep their businesses running smoothly.

Although Rick began his studies in journalism, it was a friend who encouraged him to try horticulture. He quickly discovered the industry’s down-to-earth people and the satisfaction of helping greenhouse businesses succeed. After college, Rick worked in a greenhouse and realized he was more drawn to sourcing plants for others. “I was interested in starting my own greenhouse or garden center and thought the exposure to existing businesses would help me formulate a plan and grow a business. However, I really enjoyed sales and stayed with it.”

Over the years, Rick has witnessed major shifts in horticulture, from helping run bark soil mix trials at the University of Missouri in the 1980s (a precursor to today’s soilless substrates) to the rise of digital photography and instant online access to plant data. Gone are the days of carrying film rolls through gardens and greenhouses; now “my good friend Google” is a daily tool.

Rick’s expertise lies in staying organized, anticipating customer needs, and drawing from his wide supplier network to locate the right plants at the right time. Water quality testing gave Rick an edge early in his career at W.R. Grace. He learned to recognize nutrient deficiencies just by walking a greenhouse, then verify them with lab samples. As he puts it, “Once you know the alkalinity of the water, and the fertilizer they are using, it’s relatively easy to figure out what is causing the symptoms. I’ve used this knowledge to help customers pretty regularly.” At EHR, he pushed for and championed the use of digital recap reports, a system that streamlined record-keeping and continues to benefit both sales reps and customers.

Outside of work, Rick enjoys tending a conifer garden (accented with trial planters of next season’s varieties, of course) while also lending a hand in family, friends’, and neighbors’ gardens. Writing, reading, music, hiking, and cooking are other passions. A pillar in Rick’s life is family, from sharing new recipes at the holidays to hiking and planning the next big adventure together.

A lifelong learner, Rick is curious about emerging segments such as edibles, microgreens, and beekeeping. And whether in the greenhouse or the kitchen, he continues to live by his practical mantra: “Ask questions. Listen. Look. Get all the data. Then handle.”

Thank you, Rick – for reminding us that learning never stops and for the success and support you bring to EHR every day.
